617 – The End – Richard

Richard

On the Island

This storyline came completely out of left field.  It seemed to me that Richard’s story was heading towards death.  I didn’t think it would be tragic, I figured he’d die happily.  It turns out he learned to live happily.  That’s a very interesting direction.

-I was quite wrong about Richard.  Not only did he survive his little toss through the jungle, but he survived the end of the show.  Maybe he never died, we didn’t see him in the Afterlife.  (I do think that he died.)

-I don’t think I was alone in rolling my eyes at Richard’s insistence on staying with the plan to blow up the plane.

-I was so happy for Richard when he saw the grey hair.  That’s one of the strangest things about Lost, you can be happy when a character finds out he’s mortal.

-I figure Richard started aging once Jacob’s ashes were used up, or burnt up.  Or maybe it was after the Light went out of the Island.  Or maybe a combination of the two.  I don’t think it started when Jacob died.  I think a lot of stuff happened on the Island when Jacob’s ashes were use up.  A lot of Jacob’s rules were undone.

-I really wonder what Richard’s plan is when he gets off the Island.  I guess he could lead Ben’s off-Island Others.  There did seem to be an amazing amount of people who worked for Ben.
Or maybe he could be a history professor or something.

    h aha

    history professor!

Probably he was more linked to Isabella and she had nothing to do with our Losties — except Hurley — so he went to an Afterlife with her.

I like that he got off the Island and was happy to be mortal.
I agree that it was either: When Jacob’s ashes burned or after the Light was out.

I called it that he was going to be alive still — but my darned post disappeared so it might look like I cheated! irritating

so either surviving his toss is proof of the ash theory or the light theory — don’t remember when Jacob’s fire went out…do you?

Jacob’s fire went out after that. Definitely.

Or maybe things changed when Jacob “passed the cup” to Jack.

    New Guardian = Game Re-set?

Also, there’s nothing that’ll make a man want to live more than realizing he can die, I guess!

    ~Cheers!

Maybe Richard wasn’t ready yet. He had lived all those years on the island, being loyal to Jacob and now he can live a normal life-decide what he wants to do.
I think he’ll end up with the gang on the other side as he lived so long tied to the island, and impacted the gang and vv.
Anyway, it was nice he lived after that smokey smack, and could have a new, mortal life.
