216 – The Whole Truth

Review:

Jin and Sun start to argue, Jin exerts too much control over Sun.  So Sun fights back.  Haven’t we seen this episode before?  This time Sun is pregnant.  Whoa.  Who needs character development when you can have babies.  This reminds me of one of the rules of sitcoms, stop watching once one of the characters gets pregnant.  It turns out Lost makes pregnancy a lot more exciting than usual but in the end it’s still a dead-end storyline that is only ever used when writers don’t know what else to do.

Luckily that wasn’t all that happened in this episode.  Ben got to have a lot of fun in the last few scenes, and Ana Lucia has some great moments too.

4.0/10.0

Ben

-“You people have been looking for someone to punish, someone to blame and I’m him.”

-I love the way that Ben acts when they let him out of the armory.  He does his best at feigning innocence and goodwill.

-Ben’s speech at the end of the episode, “Of course if I was one of them, these people you seem to think are your enemies, what would I do?  Hmmm, there’s be no balloon, so I’d draw a map to a real secluded place, like a cave or some underbrush, a good place for a trap, an ambush.  And when your friends got there a bunch of my people would be waiting for them.  Then they’d use them to trade for me…  I guess it’s a good thing I’m not one of them…  You guys got any milk?”  Ben is so scary.  He did all of that just to get back at them.  He can scare them so bad.  That scene was so mindblowing at the time, now it’s just hilarious.

Sawyer

-I love that Sawyer tells Jin that Sun’s pregnant, but he can’t understand.

Kate

Locke

-Locke asks Ana Lucia to help interrogate Ben, he says he wants Ben out of his hatch, that seems to be his only motivation.  For being a potential Other Locke doesn’t seem to interested in Ben.

-I think Locke and Jack try to find ways to annoy each other.  This time Locke got Ana Lucia without asking Jack.

Ana Lucia

-Locke enlists Ana Lucia to interrogate Ben.  That seems to be the best idea, a cop would be a safer interrogator than a Iraqi torturer.

-Ana Lucia does a very good job interogating Ben.  Surprisingly she plays the good cop routine.

-“Jack and Locke are a little too concerned about Locke and Jack.”  That statement is extremely accurate, especially in season two.

-Poor Ana Lucia notices that people don’t like her.  She tells Sayid that she feels bad about that.

Charlie

-Sayid and Charlie are quite the buddies in this episode.  That is a very odd couple.

-Wouldn’t Sayid and Ana Lucia be a little concerned and suspicious that Charlie has a gun.

-This episode is a good example of Charlie’s uselessness.  He’s a nice guy, and pretty funny but he doesn’t serve any purpose at all in this episode, he’s just along for the ride.

Jin

-Jin neglected his wife in their flashbacks, what a revelation.

-The abusive then repentant Jin storyline is so payed out, it is very, very boring.

Sun

-And Sun and Jin wanted a baby but couldn’t have one.  That was actually news, but nothing too exciting, they could have explained that in a conversation, we didn’t need a whole flashback episode.

-Sun’s pregnancy test was made by Whidmore labs.  I wouldn’t actually think this is significant, except that it was written before Penny was even introduced.

-Sun finds out she can’t have children so she goes and has sex with her English instructor.  That’s cool.

-Sun promises Jin that she has never slept with another man.  That was a dangerous move for her.

Sayid

-Sayid really wants Ben to be lying about the balloon.  He seems pretty blood-thirsty.

Jack

-Jack brings Ben out of his room to eat.  You can see him starting to trust Ben.

Flashbacks (what we knew then):

-I was so sure that The Others were going to ambush Ana Lucia, Sayid and Charlie based on the map Ben gave them.

    Hey Izi,

It seems even more unsettling that Ben tells them what he could do and doesn’t … just to show them in the end that he could. It shows how truly vulnerable the Losties are and how Ben can get to them anytime HE wants to, physically or mentally.

    And the milk line…..CLASSIC!

    “You guys got any milk?”

Fantastic. They hired Emerson full time (as opposed to him being a guest star) on the strength of that line.

The last time Charlie had a gun, he filled Ethan full of holes when they wanted him to talk. Plus, he just tried to kidnap a baby and run into the sea with him. Do they not learn?
