317 – Catch 22

317-naomi-01

Review:

This was a Desmond episode.  So does that mean it was on the same level as his other episodes, “Live Together, Die Alone”, “Flashes Before Your Eyes”, and “The Constant”?  No… BUT it still was quite good.  It started out with one of Desmond’s precognitive visions.  He sees Charlie die again, but he also sees a mysterious new person land on the island.  Desmond believes that this person is Penny.  Obviously that is exciting for us and him.  It isn’t Penny, but that’s not to say that we didn’t see Penny in this episode.

Who we do meet, for the first time, is Naomi.  Naomi is a gloriously important character since she is the first of the Freighter Folk to come to the island.  This is essentially the beginning of the season 4 story arc.

There’s also a Desmond flashback in this episode.  It’s not very good.  We find out that he walked out on his old girlfriend and he had a religious portion of his life when he joined a monestary.  The flashback was dull and didn’t tell us much.  But right at the end, when it seems like the entire flahback was a waste of time, they save the day by showing us how Desmond and Penny met.  That scene is just too good.

8.0/10.0

317-desmond-01Character Impressions:

Desmond

-So Desmond calls people “brotha” because he was once a monk?  Desmond doesn’t seem terribly religious anymore.  Then again he wasn’t very religious when he was a monk either.

-Desmond’s visions are exempt from the rules of predestiny that Lost usually has.  In Lost, if they show the future it’s set and it won’t change (unlike Heroes).  But as we see in Desmond’s visions, if he seems something he can change things.

-Desmond’s decision in this episode is pretty rough.  He has to choose between delaying the inevitable and reuniting with Penny.  I don’t know if I would have made that same choice that he did.

-It seems to me that the entire purpose of the flashback was to show that Desmond and Penny were meant to be together.   Or at least show how great they are together.

317-desmond-penny-01Penny

-That last scene with Desmond and Penny meeting inter-spliced with Desmond getting Naomi down was just too awesome.  And the wonderfully happy scene mixed with the possibly tragic scene was absolutely profound.

Sawyer

-Sawyer to Jack and Juliet, “You two arguing about who’s your favorite Other?”  Hilarious.

317-naomi-02Naomi

-What was Naomi doing in that helicopter?  (I’m sure I’ll find out soon, in the upcoming episodes.  I’ve probably just forgotten.)  But at the moment, doesn’t it seem strange that she was flying a helicopter alone to the island?

-When they find Naomi hanging from the tree it is so reminiscent of Lord of the Fies where they find the dead paratrooper hanging from his parachute in a tree.

-How the deuce did Naomi get so far into the jungle?  She just jumped out of her helicopter and glided into the middle of the island?  It seems weird.

317-kate-sawyer-01Kate

-Kate does her annoying “flirt with Jack and Sawyerin the same episode”  thing.  Sometimes I don’t think there is a consensus in the writers room about how she’s supposed to act.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of the writers don’t know who she’s supposed to end up with.

Charlie

-It’s so terribly shocking when Charlie gets killed in that first scene.  The writers are so mean to us sometimes.

317-charlie-01Jin

-Jin tells a scary story at their camp-out.  Too funny.

-The writers seems pretty desperate to get Jin into the story.  He served no useful purpose in this episode, but I guess if they are going to pay this actor to stay around they might as well keep him in the scenes.

Flashbacks (what we knew then):

-My original theory about Naomi was something along the lines of an assassin who someone sent to kill Penny and Desmond.  Almost close.

Flashforwards (what we know now):

-If Desmond had let Charlie die then would it have been Penny in the helicopter?  I don’t see how that’s possible because it would have meant that a large amount of history would have to change too.  Penny and Mr Whidmore’s boats would have had to change positions, Penny would have had to find the island first and… well it’s just impossible.  If anyone has any kind of insight in this subject feel free to tell me.

317-monk-ms-hawkins-01-We get to see a terribly photoshopped picture of the head monk guy (the Prior, am I making that word up?) with Ms. Hawkins.  What does this mean, well I have a theory about that.  Wait for it… wait for it… they’re related!  I know, right?  Shocking stuff.  But in all seriousness I have no idea.  I figure they must be brother and sister or something, because I doubt monks are allowed to keep pictures of women on their desks.  But that’s just me.  Any other good theories out there?  I’m sure anyone could come up with a better theory than that.

“But at the moment, doesn’t it seem strange that she was flying a helicopter alone to the island?”

I thought Frank took her there…

“-Kate does her annoying “flirt with Jack and Sawyerin the same episode” thing. Sometimes I don’t think there is a consensus in the writers room about how she’s supposed to act. I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of the writers don’t know who she’s supposed to end up with.”

She flirted with Jack because she thought everything was back to normal. After rescuing him and all, having him abandon her in TMFT then not care about her in Left Behind, THEN seeing him flirting with Juliet, she used Sawyer for sex because she was jealous and frustrated. Apparently, Evi protested a lot because she didn’t want Kate to do that to Sawyer.

Damon and Carlton have said they have now decided who she will end up with.

“-If Desmond had let Charlie die then would it have been Penny in the helicopter? I don’t see how that’s possible because it would have meant that a large amount of history would have to change too. Penny and Mr Whidmore’s boats would have had to change positions, Penny would have had to find the island first and… well it’s just impossible. Remember Dan says “You can’t change the future” in The Constant? As well as TPTB continually reminding us the flash forwards are definitive. I think it’s safe to say Des was simply wishing it would be Penny. Plus, Naomi had a picture of Des and Penny which I think Des’s powers were picking up on, making him think it was Penny.

“Remember Dan says “You can’t change the future” in The Constant?”
That’s very comforting, thanks. I alwyas think that I believe that but it’s still pretty hard to believe.

The only thing I can come up with regarding the monk guy and Ms Hawkins is that they are both agents for Jacob alongside Abbadon and Richard whose sole purpose is to join all the missing dots.

What I mean with this is that they pull the neccesary strings in a very delicate and sofisticated manner in order to ensure the events we see now unfolding on the island.
Example: Abbadon was the one suggesting Locke to go on a walkabout. Maybe, Locke would have never come to the island if it wasn’t for Abbadon.
