402 – Confirmed Dead

This episode is our introduction to the four Freighter Folk.  If you’ve been reading this blog for very long you should know that I love new characters.  And I think that by season 4, the writers have hit their stride with their intros (they weren’t so good at it in season 2, and they only got it half right in season3).  They know what they did wrong in the past and really don’t want to make those same mistakes.

So we get these new characters.  If you ask me they each deserve warm welcomes.  I love these characters.  (I really only count three of them, but you can read about that later).

As for the episode, it accomplished a lot.  It gave us slight insights into each of these characters (we haven’t got much beyond this episode, unfortunately).  It also explained why they were sent to the island.

And right at the very end of the episode we get a wonderful lead-out.  Ben reveals that he has someone on the Freighter.  I love this new format, each episode ends with a slight cliffhanger that leads into the next episode or the rest of the season.

This episode is very fast pace and it gives us a lot of info. 8.0/10.0

Matthew Abbadon says that all of four Freighter Folk were chosen for a reason.  They all had a purpose on the island.  In the section below I will guess at what I believe their purposes were.

110898_342Character Impressions:

-Daniel’s Purpose: Daniel Faraday was sent to the island to find the way in and to offer insight into the Dharma Initiative’s stations.  He did find the proper bearing to get in and out and he tried his best to protect people from the condition that Desmond and Minkowski had.  He also helped, with his little journal, to identify the Dharma stations and to make them available for use.  Fortunately Naomi didn’t survive long enough to take advantage of his knowledge, otherwise The Tempest might have been used to kill everyone instead of being disabled.  Daniel also could have been able to disable Smokey.  If my guesses are right and Smokey is nothing more than a magnetic field carrying particles of metal then perhaps he could do something to it.

-Daniel cries when he sees the footage of the plane.  I believe that’s because he flashes back and forth, much like Desmond in “The Constant”.  If he flashed back to that moment after meeting all the people from the plane it would be upsetting to hear that they died.

-“The light..it’s strange out here, isn’t it?  It’s kinda like it-it doesn’t scatter quite right.”

402-ben-01-I love Locke and Ben’s reactions when Hurley mentions Jacob’s Cabin.  They both just freeze and consider what it means.  They both think that they are so special, then suddenly Hurley is just as special as them.

-Ben has the best line ever in this episode.  Karl says, “Keep your mouth shut Mr. Linus,”  Ben says, “Karl, now if you’re going to sleep with my daughter, I insist you call me Ben.”

-When Ben shot Charlotte I freaked out.  I literally yelled.  I didn’t see it coming at all and I wouldn’t put it past the writers to kill a character immediately after introducing them (that’s what they did to Minkowski).

-Charlotte’s purpose on the island was to provide insight into the Dharma Initiative by means of anthropology and possibly even archeology.  She was also meant to help Daniel along.  Daniel knew about Dharma in it’s prime.  It’s been decades since then and the Dharma stations aren’t exactly in tip top shape, so Charlotte was there to help.  There’s also a chance that she was so desperate to get to the island that she may have conned her way in.  that remains to be seen.

402-charlotte-02-They showed Charlotte putting her bulletproof vest on in the helicopter.  I never noticed that before.

-Charlotte finds the Polar Bear in the Tunisian Desert in this episode.  (See Below)

-Charlotte didn’t believe that the plane that they found was actually the real plane.  Her friend asked her when she was going to start believing it.  I wonder why she doubted the story?

402-charlotte-03-You can’t argue with the fact that Charlotte was thrilled to be on the island.  Her face when she is getting out of the water is just ecstatic.

-I really enjoy Charlotte’s awkward conversation with Locke’s group.  It’s just too much fun.  And I love seeing her perspective of that group, it would have been so strange.  “What’s wrong with you people?”

-Charlotte asks whether Aaron is Claire’s baby.  She says yes.  “And you had him here on the island… That’s amazing.”  If only she had been more clear.  Was she amazed that people could have babies on the island?  Or was she amazed that she had delivered a baby in the jungle?  Hopefully it was the former.  It would be far more interesting if Charlotte knew about the pregnancy troubles on the island.

-Sawyer’s really stuck between a rock and a hard place in this episode.  He doesn’t want to be rescued because his life on the island isn’t the worst thing that can happen to him and he is really not sure about Locke and Ben’s leadership.

-Sawyer and Locke are going to have a rough time on the island in season 5.  Those two have a hard time getting along.

-“Who are we to argue with Taller Ghost Walt?”

-I like the way Juliet thinks.  She trusts Jack but at the same time she isn’t blindly loyal to him.  She still suspects that the Freighter Folk could mean them harm and she’s willing to plan behind Jack’s back.

-One of my favorite parts of this episode is when the Freighter Folk find out that Juliet wasn’t on the plane.

-Kate kinda treats Daniel like a child for most of this episode.

-Locke predicts the weather again.  This could be explained by his outdoorsy experience or he could be some kind of prophet.

-Miles is a Ghostbuster (he even has a vacuum-like device).  He was put on the island to bust ghosts, one ghost in particular, Jacob.  Without Jacob in power on the island it could be more possible for Charles to take control.  It’s highly likely that Charlies Whidmore dislikes Jacob for backing Ben, if that is so then you can see his motivation in bringing someone who has the ability to dispel ghosts.

402-miles-02-I really hated Miles in this episode.  I think we were meant to dislike him.

-Miles’ flashback apparently is full of strange anomalies and the such, but I have no idea what they mean.  I think they may have just thrown those things in there to make sure that we realized he was very supernatural.

402-frank-01-Frank was there to bring people to and from the island, that is all.  Put yourselves in the writers position, you write 16 or so stories about characters going to and from the island.  How are you going to get them there and back?  Will you use a faceless pilot?  Will you use one of the three previously written characters?  Nope you’ll create a new character with enough mystique surrounding him to be interesting.  Frank is not the main character that we all thought he was, he’s nothing more than a driver who moves the story along.

402-frank-02-They make it seem like Frank is terribly important but the fact that he was supposed to be flying 815 doesn’t mean anything.  It’s just a happy coincidence that makes him seem more interesting.

-I also doubt that the cow means anything.

Flashbacks (what we knew then):

-The opening scene with the subs finding the fake Oceanic 815 wreckage was fun.  In case we didn’t believe that they actually did find the plane they showed it to us for sure.

402-plane-wreckage-01-I don’t know if this is just my imagination, but wasn’t Kirstin Bell supposed to play Charlotte?

Flashforwards (what we know now):

-I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll do it again here.  I believe that the polar bear in the desert was used to turn the Frozen Donkey Wheel that we see in the finale.  That’s why he was in the desert.  I am 100% sure about that, and I think we all should be.  Mystery solved.

The producers have said Smokey predates Dharma, so I don’t think it’s a Function of a station or what have you that Faraday could shut off. I’m starting to wonder if Smokey isn’t Jacob’s cabin (and Yemi, Kate’s horse, Nikki’s spiders . . .)

” -I don’t know if this is just my imagination, but wasn’t Kirstin Bell supposed to play Charlotte? ”

Indeed she was…but she chose Heroes
    Good call by the way

“If my guesses are right and Smokey is nothing more than a magnetic field carrying particles of metal then perhaps he could do something to it.”

Very interesting — I wonder if Smokey is the dark, negatively charged matter being shuttled around by said magnetic field.
    Ah Science.
    My theory maketh no sense.
BUT it is based on this: When Ben shuttled off into the secret door behind the secret door, there were heiroglyphs and down with the Frozen Donkey Wheel there were heiroglyphs and Halliwax (or whichever candle-based name you prefer) said they built the Orchid close to a pocket of ‘negatively charged exotic matter’. Whatever the h*ll that means!

Ben does get some fantastic lines. His delivery really makes the difference.
Sawyer’s (which you qouted) is my favourite in this episode.

Charlotte definitely knows more about the current island than Daniel.

I am still unconvinced that anyone was in any danger from the Tempest. I think Ben used it as a foil, banking on the Purge being evidence enough to create doubt/fear of him wiping out people. Look at how much he was able to accomplish while they were bouncing about the jungle trying to neutralize it — as Harper said, Ben is right where he wants to be.
(sorry getting ahead again — but you brought it up)

“He was put on the island to bust ghosts, one ghost in particular, Jacob.”

Oooh very interesting. I never even considered that. Why is Jacob’s ghost so influential? And Christian’s? The other ghosts seem to be hovering around their bodies (according to Miles repsonse to their corpses anyways) – what seperates these 2 spectres? and Charlie I guess.

Oh and apparently anything goes on broadcast television in the Lindeloff/Carelton world — decaying bodies underwater and a closeup! on the regular news? Disgusting!

Ben is as strong as a Polar Bear? Remarkable.

That 2nd use of the word shuttled was actually supposed to be sCuttled

I think that Daniel probably knows the most about the island, but his memory problems are inhibiting him. If he could remember things then he would be more useful. Fortunately he has that notebook.
And I think the Tempest could have caused trouble if Keamy got there. So Daniel and CHarlotte did it to protect themselves from Ben, but it could have also protected everyone from Keamy too.

Yeah, if Keamy was up on his science based math and computer hacking skills he could have posed a threat to the Island inhabitants — if that gas is even deadly. Sure it burned Goodwin but…that doesn’t follow that it will kill entire populations.

    But…I’m likely just being difficult.

I think it would have been easier to release the gas onto the island than it was to make it inert. And I think that the gas was how Ben purged Dharma. Charlotte eludes to that, and Ben and Richard were wearing gas masks after the purge.
