The most common Lost question I have heard: Why are there Polar Bears on the island.  Of course everyone saw the Pilot or the commercials about the Pilot and they all are confused or put off by the fact that there are Polar Bears on a tropical island.

I personally couldn’t care less, something like Polar Bears on a tropical island just cause interesting stories, do we really have to know why they are there.

But apparently we do so I’ll tell you why I think they are there.

We know the island has moved in the past, hence Ben’s familiarity with that power of the island (see this page for more about the island moving).  I believe that at one point the island was at the North Pole, or close to it.  Hence Penny building a monitoring station up there.  Also it could explain the magnetic properties of the island.  Since the island was up in the Arctic Circle, it became a home to Polar Bears, when the island unexpectedly moved, so did the Polar Bears.  Voila.

Ok, i agree with you about who cares why there’s polar bears on the island, it obviously doesn’t really matter. I just found your site here, and I really like it. I don’t know when this was posted but I think it needs an update. The bear cages that Saywer, Kate, and Jack were all in, obviously Dharma was just doing some tests on polar bears and when they all died the bears got loose. Now I guess this hasn’t been confirmed ? But I don’t think polar bears will play a very big part in Season 6. Although I still am curious why Walt looked at a picture of a bird – bird appears. Walt reads comic with polar bear – polar bear appears. So maybe there it something more to the polar bears than I’m seeing. I enjoyed your theory about the North Pole though, you’re very creative, good blog.

Yeah, the polar bears were left behind by the Dharma Initiative. At some point, I think it was Dr Straume that threatens someone by saying something like I’ll transfer you to project 3. How would you like scooping up polar bear poop?
