601 – LA X (part 1)

Review:

I started watching this episode thinking that I was not going to enjoy it.  I thought that either we’d have a timeline reset or not, it was one way or another.  I would have been unhappy either way.  With the Reset I would have been bored with that time period and I would have hated to see all that “progress” disappear.  Without the Reset, Juliet and Daniel died for nothing, and frankly with a title like LA X and news that every former cast member was coming back, it wasn’t possible for there not to be a Reset.  So I pretty much ignored Lost during the hiatus.  If I spent too much time thinking about it I would make myself angry.

At Comic-Con Darlton asked us to trust them.  And I’m very glad that I did.  They are geniuses.  I would never have guessed that they were doing to diverging timelines.  I’ve heard a few bloggers suggest it as a possibility, but frankly I rarely believe anything my fellow bloggers say, I wouldn’t say that to their face, but it’s true.  Seeing it in action is just glorious.  It’s literally the best of both worlds.

As for this episode specifically, it was awesome.  The inevitable scene that showed that the plane didn’t crash and then underwater Island reveal was perfectly devastating (not unlike the underwater Oceanic 815 wreckage).  At that point I was ready to resign myself to the fact that the writers had chosen the more boring route of starting over.

But that was just the first intro.  The second was another slow reveal of another timeline.  Too good.  Suddenly we were presented with a new format and an amazing new story.

Cut to the beach and we have more insanity.  It’s casually revealed that “Locke” is Smokey.  Smokey tears up some people with guns and blows our mind (what’s new).

Then Jacob shows up to visit Hurley and it turns out he’s very dead but he isn’t helpless, he seems to have a plan, or at least hope.  It’s very comforting to hear Jacob giving orders even from beyond the grave.

All of this is peppered with visits from characters we thought dead.  Charlie and Boone were exciting to someone out there, not me.  But the return of Juliet was quite wonderful.  I still wish that Juliet and Sawyer could have had a happily ever after, but I realize I’m being naive.  That’s not the kind of show I signed on for.  What we did get was a small amount of closure and at least a new final image of Juliet (If I have to see that scene with Juliet’s slow death again… well I’ll outline my plans below).

My expectations for this episode were at about a 7 maybe an 8, but this is honestly a 10.0, mostly for the introduction of this glorious new format (Smokey=”Locke” didn’t hurt).

Season 6 Premiere Expectations

Let’s all get our hopes up. Let’s raise our expectations so high that the show will never be able to meet them. Yeah!

What Do You Want?

What do you want from the Season 6 premiere? Do you want a grand reunion episode? Do you want Jughead to reset the past? Or do you want it to simply cause a big explosion? Do you want the past to be ignored? Or do you want the story to pick up where it left off, with our 70s heroes standing around The Swan and our 07 heroes standing around the foot?

Exploded Swan

Now that I’m almost completely out of time I thought I’d float out a new thought. I was rewatching the Season 5 premiere again and I noticed something interesting. Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel, Miles and Charlotte go for a jaunt into the jungle. They go searching for The Swan to verify what year it is (a useless idea since they have a flash once before they get there and another while they’re leaving). Through Locke’s story we know that at the point when they get to the Swan it is 2007, after Ajira crashes on the Island. Richard met him in that episode under “Locke”‘s direction. What caught my eye was the condition of The Swan.

Juliet: Dead or Alive

116031_280

After some hardcore commenting after the finale, and a lot of thought I’ve finally come to the conclusion that Juliet isn’t dead.  Don’t get too excited, I have no proof, I have some ideas but no real proof.  First I want to talk about Juliet.

Season 5 Finale Speculation

 115865_079

How is Season 5 going to end?  As we draw closer to the finale that is the question on everyone’s mind.

I’ve had many mini theories about the ending during the season , I’ve discarded most of them.  I must admit that I knew pretty far in advance what the episode was called, “The Incident”, so that was a big hint.  I remember thinking very early on in the season that the it would end with the Oceanic 6 coming back, the skipping stopping and a big reunion.  This season moved way faster than I expected, I was completely shocked when the Oceanic “6” came to the Island in episode six.  After Jughead aired I expected the season to end with a large hydrogen bomb going off. I discarded that theory an episode after Jughead (and apparently that was too soon).  After that I just got caught up in the story.

So here we are.  The finale starts tomorrow, what do we think will happen?  Will Jack change the past by blowing up Jughead?  Will Locke kill Jacob?  Will the Third Party succeed in it’s…plan?  Will Sawyer and Juliet get off the Island and live happily ever after?  Will anyone die?  What will the cliffhanger be?  What will season 6 look like?

515 – Follow the Leader

515 - Richard 01

Review:

Lost is making me feel uncomfortable.  That’s not normal, mostly I just get a thrill out of the twists, now it’s just hurting me.

Here’s the thing, I’ve had strong, permanent views about many characters in this show:

  • Daniel was my favorite and I trust and believe him
  • I like Locke even when he’s misguided
  • Sawyer is usually a level head
  • Jack is a fool
  • Richard is all knowing and steady
  • Kate isn’t to be trusted
  • and Jacob is good

This episode made me rethink all of those things, and it wasn’t fun.  I get that the shows winding down, but shouldn’t that mean that our group should be regrouping, banding together.  Suddenly I have to choose a side, Jack or Kate, Locke or Jacob, Sawyer or The Island.  These conflicts are hurting me.

And Daniel is still dead.

The conclusion I’ve reached is this, I didn’t like this episode, but this was a setup episode for the finale.  I usually dislike these episodes until after I see the finale, at which point the setup seemed genius.  But right now I’m left thinking back on an episode that had Sayid return, Daniel dead and Richard acting confused.  These aren’t good things.

6.0/10.0  (It’s only above five in anticipation of the next episode.

By the way: If that was a Richard-centric episode then I am left wanting more.
