607 – Dr. Linus

Review:

Well that’s a rarity, a happy Lost episode.  I shouldn’t really call it happy.  It was probably melancholy at best.  But still, at the end I was feeling extremely happy.  That hasn’t happened on Lost in years, since The Constant.

We saw some great guest stars, all relating to Ben, of course.  We saw Alex, and this time it was actually her; Roger, the nice version; and Widmore, coming to cause trouble, no doubt.

Poor Richard was feeling suicidal, but Jack was there, as usual, to brighten the mood.  They had a very interesting talk and in the end Jack managed to share some of his faith with Richard.

That Ben/Ilana face-off scene was one of the most gratifying moments in Lost history.  It might have even been worth an Emmy for Michael Emerson.  And having Ilana give him another chance was just too great.  Ben chose the right side.  Who knew the writers would redeem Ben this early into the final season.

The final scene at the beach was very obviously a throw-back to the season 1/2/3 endings.  The beach people doing menial duties, the slow motion, the soundlessness, the slowly triumphant music, the reunion on the beach.  At least this time there weren’t any awkward hugs with Red-shirts.

I really enjoyed this episode.  The Jack and Richard stuff was great, it showed that Jack is actually progressing towards his destiny.  But this wasn’t a Jack episode or a Richard episode, it was about Ben.  And for once Ben didn’t do what he thought he had to do.  He actually changed, I never really believed that this guy was going to change.  As Jacob would say “just progress”.  For some very surprising progress and a happy ending I’ll give this episode a 8.0/10.0.

513 – Some Like it Hoth

Review:

I thought this episode was going to be a fun little jaunt around the island with Miles and Hurley.  At times it was pretty light, but it was also pretty serious at times.

We got confirmation that Pierre and Lara are Miles’ parents, and Miles knew that too.  This episode established some father issues for Miles (I believe that Daniel and Juliet are the only people without daddy issues on this show).

There was some slight focus on Miles’ powers but we are still left to guess at how he got the powers.  It was very interesting to hear Miles and Hurley compare their powers though.

In the “Main” storyline, the pressure on our group is growing.  Phil tried to confront Sawyer and had to be stopped, and now Roger is on the case too.

This episode showed a lot more about the Dharma Stations, we’ve been stuck at The Barracks, so it was good to have a tour to see what’s built and what isn’t.

And last but not least we saw Bram, the large scary man with Ilana.  He attempted to prevent Miles from going to the Island with Naomi.  The clues regarding this new group are very intriguing, I can’t wait to find out more.

The episode wasn’t a comic relief episode, but it also wasn’t crucial.  Ont he bright side we finally got a Miles flashback, and it answered almost all of our questions about him.  This episode certainly wasn’t bad and the Star Wars references really helped it’s score 7.0/10.0

(I’m back to my old format!  It wasn’t worth posting twice in a night, or maybe it was, I don’t know.  I’m just trying this way again.)

511 – Whatever Happened, Happened

Review:

It’s the Morpheus episode!  Remember in The Matrix Reloaded, when they were leaving the Merovingian’s house Morpheus says, “Whatever happened, happened, and couldn’t have happened any other way”.  It’s true.  This episode hopefully cleared up all that talk about separate timelines and paradoxes that came up after Sayid shot Ben.  (This was also almost an episode of ER, final episode on tonight.  A tear.)

This episode also answered more burning questions about Kate.  This is one of the first times I’ve been so eager to have a Kate episode since we saw “What Kate Did”.  There was a lot of misdirection in this episode, but we finally got to see what Kate did with Aaron, and we got to see Kate’s reunion with Cassidy.  As you may or may not know, I was hoping (futilely) that Kate would leave Aaron with Cassidy.  I was wrong (how unusual).

This episode also proved a few other very useful things in regards to the love square.  Juliet and Jack will never have a future, Sawyer doesn’t think that he will have a future with Kate, Kate doesn’t think she came back to the island for Sawyer, and Kate and Juliet are now very similar and can work well together.  We also learned that the new and improved Jack still has the ability to be a douche.

But back to the time travel business.  I really hope that this episode cleared everything up for you skeptics.

As for Ben’s storyline, It was glorious to have him go to The Hostiles.  There’s still a huge blank in his life that we haven’t learned about, but it’s cool to see more of his origins.  And we got a slight glimpse into The Hostiles.  Richard is almost in charge but apparently he has Ms. Hawking and Mr. Widmore watching over his shoulder.

I really enjoyed this episode, it didn’t have much mythology and it centered on Kate, but it really delivered.  8.5/10.0
