Nielsen Ratings are like the Bile in the body of Television.  It’s absolutely disgusting, pretty much poisonous, but for some reason it’s very important.  If you don’t have enough of it you die, and if you have too much… well that’s here that my metaphor really falls apart.  The point is, that Nielsen TV ratings will make or break a show, regardless of how good it is.

Lost ratings have fluctuated over the years.  They have gone up for no reason, and down for no reason.  Currently they are at a relatively comfortable position.  They don’t have huge number but they are very steady and the viewers (I should say we) are the exact demographic that they want to attract.  Ratings on Network TV have fallen very quickly so while it looks like Lost viewers are leaving, it’s relative, because viewers are leaving all the shows.  I should say that you shouldn’t be obsessed with following the ratings or speculating on what they mean but that’s exactly how I am so maybe you should be concerned.

While I disagree completely with the way Nielsen measures viewers, it is very important.  Shows don’t get canceled simply because they suck, they get canceled because no one is watching them.  On the other hand, networks will keep absolute garbage on their networks as long as it draws and audience.  Look at American Idol, it’s still on the air, it gets the best ratings on TV and it serves no purpose whatsoever (if I’ve offended you then good, you shouldn’t be wasting hours every week watching that outrageous show, if your looking for TV shows to waste your time on look here for a list of genuinely good TV shows).  Arrested Development is the perfect example of what happens when a show has bad ratings, it had terrible, terrible ratings, I still don’t know why, but that’s why it was canceled.

What I want to do on this page is to copy out all the ratings from Lost in the past and whenever new episodes come on I will update the page.  I get my numbers from Marc Berman, who has an absolute monopoly on these numbers, he has two sites that have his ratings: TV Tracker & Pi Feed Back.  If anyone can find another source for ratings please tell me (occasionally I look at TV by the Numbers, but they get their numbers from Marc too).

You may notice that in my Revlysis’ I write the ratings there and discuss them a little.

At some point I want to go back and find all the numbers for Live+7 day DVR viewers and also the Ratings/Share.  (Technically what I have below is just the amount of viewers not the actual rating, I just have that because it is the easiest to understand.)

“If you don’t have enough of it you die, and if you have too much… well that’s here that my metaphor really falls apart”

I wish there was a way to know when you are going to be funny so that I don’t have to snort milk.

It’s weird that 16 million tuned in to the 1st ep of this season and then about 4 million people stopped.

It’s too long in between seasons/eps and on the wrong night.
Look at the number drop from Nov – Feb the year before too.
I wonder where the corporation draws the line #’s wise as to what = keep going and what = cancel.

    Probably you already know.
